Jenni and Toni have just returned from Chennai (the new name for Madras) where we are setting up a collaborative educational research and development project providing homework help. The details will be announced in our September issue. Greetings to our friends in Padma Seshadi Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School, Madras where we were very impressed by the maths lessons we observed and the student presentations of the work they had done in their Maths Lab. We particularly liked some of their paper folding and the circular pinboard to demonstrate geometrical properties of triangles and circles. The photos show the school and all the banners are for the students' election campaign for school captains. The other photo of a juggernaut is included because it shows so many interesting shapes. Can you estimate it's height from the people, cars and buildings around? The word juggernaut comes from the Hindus and was adopted for monster motor vehicles only in the last century. The statue of Krishna, eighth avatar of Vishnu, at Puri is annually dragged in procession on a huge juggernaut, under the wheels of which devotees are said to have formerly thrown themselves in sacrifice.
