If you can start this using craft match sticks or cocktail sticks, all the better. They help to show that all the lines are the same length. Isometric lined or dotty paper is also a help.
Some pupils will be able to organise their results without help but others might need the guidance of a table like this:
| row | number of triangles | number of sticks |
|---|---|---|
The last column is for anything that turns up! Older pupils can be asked to explain the patterns found in the numbers.
The investigation can be continued with squares and even hexagons. Decisions have to be made on how these are to grow. This means that variations on the numbers may be found.
