Match the cards with the same value.

Keep an eye on your score - ending at around 400 would be an
excellent score.

If you print double-sided, the cards will each have an NRICH logo
on the back. If you would prefer them to be blank on the back,
please just print the first page.

Why play this game?

This game can be played to speed up recognition of equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.

Possible approach

Play the game with the class at the interactive white board, to explain the game and revise the subject.

Ask pupils to play the game on computers, or with printed out cards - seeing how quickly they can clear the cards.

Bring the class together and ask for any tips / strategies / special things to remember that help with the game. Ask if the cards are too easy, too hard, what else could have been on the cards.

Ask pupils to make a memory card game, to practise fraction / decimal / percentage equivalence. Suggest that they make it difficult but not impossible for their class. You could stipulate that pupils' games turn 3 cards on each go, and try to find a matching triple (fraction / decimal / %)

Demonstrate Fraction and Coins Game and Fraction and Percentage Card Game on the interactive white board, to suggest ways to make the game easier / harder.

Key questions

When you see 0.3, what are you thinking / looking for?

Which cards are easy / difficult?

Possible extension

Play Fraction Card Game 4 where the card matching requires calculations.

Possible support

Allow pupils to keep a record of the value of the cards that they have turned.

Play Fraction Card Game 2

Ask pupils to design a game with fewer cards, but with the most important facts.

</mdoxml></noteXML>
 <clueXML>
<mdoxml version="1.0">

The cards come in pairs and you start with 100 points. You click on
two cards to flip them over, if they match you win 50 points, if
not you lose 5 points for each card. Try again. Remember where the
different numbers are so that you can match each card with its
partner. The game finishes when you have matched all the
pairs.

The Maths is in the Matching

The numbers on these cards are represented by fractions or by
decimals or by percentages and you have to match two
representations of the same number.

One third is the number you get when you divide one by three.
One third can be represented in all the following different
ways:

<mdo:image height="85" width="29" src="onethird.gif" alt=""></mdo:image>

$$\frac{1}{3} \mbox{ or as an equivalent fraction e.g. }
\frac{3}{9} \mbox{ or } \frac{5}{15}$$

$$0.3333... = 0.3 \mbox{ recurring } = 0.\bar{3}$$

$$33 \frac{1}{3} \%$$

</mdoxml></clueXML>
